Cloth Diaper Laundry 101

Once you decide to take the plunge and start cloth diapers, the next question that comes up is "How do I wash my cloth diapers?"

At Cozy Bums, we suggest everyone start with a very basic routine:
  1. Quick wash cycle on cold or warm.
  2. Long hot wash on the cycle with the most agitation.  Use enough detergent for a heavily soiled load.
  3. Double rinse.

If you are not feeding your baby solids, then there is no need to clean off your diapers before putting them in the wash.  Once you are feeding solids (or just prefer to not have any form of poo - even the water soluble stuff - on your diapers), feces should be disposed of in the toilet prior to washing.

Absolutely avoid any detergent with added fabric softeners, as they can cause your diapers to repel wetness instead of absorb it.  Don't use fabric softener or dryer sheets on your diapers, either.

Avoid optical brighteners in your detergent, as they work by coating the fabric.  Diapers with nothing on them at all absorb the most.

Do not use sanitize on your wash, as it is too hot for your diapers.

If you run into trouble, then tweak your routine from there to meet your needs.  That may mean dropping the extra rinse at the end or adding detergent to your first quick cycle!  Good luck, don't be afraid... and follow your manufacturer's instructions!
